What is Gemini? What can it do?
Gemini is Google’s cutting-edge AI tool, designed to act as your personal smart assistant. It understands natural language and can assist with a wide range of tasks, including:
- Writing & Editing: Struggling with writer's block or need to polish an email? Gemini can help draft documents, refine your writing, and ensure clear communication. (Remember to always proofread for accuracy and relevance!)
- Brainstorming: Need fresh ideas for event planning, process improvements, or anything in between? Gemini can help you brainstorm and explore new possibilities.
- Summarizing: Overwhelmed by long email chains, meeting minutes, or articles? Gemini can quickly summarize key information, saving you valuable time.
- Learning & Research: Have a question about a specific topic? Gemini can provide information, answer follow-up questions, and even apply that knowledge to specific scenarios.
How do I use it?
Access Gemini by visiting gemini.google.com. You can also find it in the app launcher (the "tic-tac-toe" menu) in your university Gmail.
Once you’re there, just start typing! Here are some example prompts:
- “Summarize these meeting minutes for me”
- “Make this email sound more professional, and make it shorter”
- “Write a series of excited emails to residential university students reminding them about an upcoming movie night. Include puns about lightning to reflect the ‘speed’ with which they need to RSVP. Make one for 7 days, 3 days, and 1 day from the event.”
- “What are some ideas for games to play at our tropical themed departmental Christmas party?”
- “I need a Google Sheets formula that automatically adds numbers that are greater than 37, and also have the word ‘Apple’ in the column next to them.”
- “Take this list and turn it into a table. Make the first column first names, the second column last names, and the third column majors.”
Is it secure?
As a Google Workspace for Education customer, all Gemini interactions and data are owned by APU and are not used to train Google's public AI models. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to only use Google Gemini for all worked-related tasks, and only while logged into your APU account.
Why don’t I have access to Gemini?
To maintain academic integrity, staff who are also students or faculty at APU do not have access to Gemini at this time. If you are not a student or faculty member and don't have access, please contact IT by emailing [email protected].
